Obviously not everyone is athletically gifted. No one can go out and dominate a sport without breaking a sweat. The gift of athleticism is a God given ability to run, jump, swim, throw or catch just a little bit better than the average person. But you don't need athletic ability to participate in these sporting activites. You need a desire, a will to put in hard work and sweat towards making you the best you can be. You have to dedicate yourself to the task at hand, commit to the time it takes to improve yourself. In the process of making yourself better at football, baseball or basketball you learn life-long lessons that you can not get many other places and that you will use on a daily basis. Athletics are a microcosim of life. The tools you need to compete in sports are the tools you need to compete in life. This is difficult to do on your own. You need a parent or mentor that can coach you through everything that life can throw your way. The same goes for athletics which is where coaches come in. They teach their athletes not only skill, technique and tactics but model sportsmanship, respect and good character. Everyone needs help at some point in their life, we are not born with all the knowledge in the universe, we need to be taught, we need to be coached.
